Varaha

The Puranas complete the full transition of Varaha from the form of Prajapati-Brahma to the avatar of Narayana-Vishnu. The Brahmanda Purana, the Vayu Purana, the Vishnu Purana, the Linga Purana, the Markendeya Purana, the Kurma Purana, the Garuda Purana, the Padma Purana and the Shiva Purana have similar narratives of the cosmogonic myth, wherein Brahma, identified with Narayana-Vishnu, takes the Varaha form to raise the earth from the primeval waters.

Maha

Brahma ‘Maanasa Putra’ Maharshi Marichi approached Lord Brahma to describe

‘beeja’ (seed),

‘lakshana’ (characteristic),

‘pramaana’ (means of knowledge / contents),

‘vakta’ (Acharya) and ‘shrota’ ( the Listener)

of the main line Puranas which provide the knowledge of the ‘Charaachara Jagat’ or the moveable and immoveable Universe.

 Among all the ‘Kalpas’,

https://freeglobaluniversity.blogspot.com/search/label/Kal

there actually was stated to be one Single Purana

https://freeglobaluniversity.blogspot.com/search/label/Sing

comprising one hundred crore ‘Shlokas’ (stanzas)

https://freeglobaluniversity.blogspot.com/search/label/Sloka

with the ‘Four Purusharthas’ of Dharma, Artha, Kama and Mokshas as the ‘bijas’;

https://freeglobaluniversity.blogspot.com/search/label/Goa

Lord Brahma told Maharshi Marichi that basically Bhagavan Vishnu bestowed a Single Purana to him which was of the volume of crores of Shlokas;

Brahma passed on to Vasishtha Maharshi who in turn gave away to Parasara Muni and the latter pronounced it aloud and Vayu Deva carried it to Veda Vyasa.

https://freeglobaluniversity.blogspot.com/search/label/VastuFeng

https://freeglobaluniversity.blogspot.com/search/label/Air

Bhagavan Vishnu created Vyasa Muni in each Yugas and the latter in turn condensed the Single Purana with only four lakh Shlokas and distributed it among Eighteen Puranas with varied number of Shlokas among these.

https://freeglobaluniversity.blogspot.com/search/label/Yas

In fact, it is stated that the Single Mother Purana continues to be in position in the Deva Lokas.

https://freeglobaluniversity.blogspot.com/search/label/33Crore

Vyasa selected only four lakh stanzas and disrtibuted these among Eighteen Puranas viz. Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, Vishnu Purana, Vayu Purana, Bhagavat Purana, Narada Purana, Markandya Purana, Agni Purana, Bhavishya Purana, Brahma Vaivartha Purana, Linga Purana, Varaaha Purana, Skanda Purana, Vamana Purana, Kurma Purana, Matsya Purana, Garuda Purana and Brahmaanda Purana.

These were sketched for ‘Loka Kalyan’ and even these highly abridged versions are apparently tough to digest.

https://freeglobaluniversity.blogspot.com/search/label/Loka

It is believed that a person who could read, hear, reproduce, annotate and assimilate all the Eighteen Puranas in full as written by Veda Vyas should have no rebirth into this ‘Samsara’once again.

Jayanta

Jayanta is described to fight in the battle between the gods and asuras (demons) in the Padma Purana. The Harivamsa mentions the battle between Indra and the god Krishna to acquire the celestial tree Parijat from Indra's heaven. Jayanta is described battling Krishna's son Pradyumna and is defeated. In the Skanda Purana, Jayanta is defeated by the asura Surapadman, who is finally killed by the commander-in-chief of the gods, Skanda.

The Vayu Purana narrates a tale wherein Jayanta is cursed and turned into a bamboo. This tale is also told in context of devadasi lore with some variation. Once the sage Agastya arrived in Indra's court and was welcomed by Indra, by organizing a dance performance of the apsara Urvashi. In the performance, Urvashi and Jayanta looked in each other's eyes in love. The distracted Urvashi missed the beat and the dance went haywire. An agitated Agastya cursed Urvashi to be born on earth as a devadasi and Jayanta to be a bamboo tree in the Vindhya mountains. The duo bowed in reverence and prayed for mercy. The sage said that the curse will end when Urvashi will be presented with a talaikole (a bamboo staff, Jayanta) on her dance debut (Arangetram). As ordained, the lovers were released from the curse and returned to heaven, when Urvashi got united with Jayanta as the bamboo staff.

According to Vishnu Purana (3.7.15-16), sage Vyasa composed the Puranas from materials contained in the tales, episode, ballads and narratives prevalent in the land and imparted it to Suta / Lomaharshana / Romaharshana for propagating it among the people.

Lomaharshana was also called because he was born of a Kshatriya man and a Brahmin woman. This explanation is given by commentator Nilakantha in his commentary on Harivamsa Purana (1.4)

Lomaharshana had six disciples – Sumati, Agnivarcas, Mitrayus, Samsampayana (Vaishampayana), Akrtavrana (Kashyapa) and Savarni. The last three composed Puranic collections of their own; so did Lomaharshana

his son Sauti Ugrarasravas, and the line of sages

who gave discourses on the Puranas at Naimisharanya, Kurukshetra and other sacred places.

Thirunelli

The name Thirunelli derives from the nelli, the Tamil/Malayalam word for Indian gooseberry of the Amla tree. Veda vyasa wrote the 18 existing Puranas. The Matsya PuranaSkanda PuranaNarasimha PuranaPadma Purana, and many other Puranas and Hindu texts mention the beautiful Vishnu temple as being built by Lord Brahma, located in the picturesque Sahya valley, deep in the middle of forest of unmatchable beauty, and in these texts, it is referred to as "Sahyamalaka Kshetra."

Harishchandragad

The fort is quite ancient. Remnants of Microlithic man have been discovered here. The various Puranas (ancient scriptures) like Matsyapurana, Agnipurana and Skandapurana include many references about Harishchandragad. Its origin is said to have been in the 6th century, during the rule of Kalachuri dynasty. The citadel was built during this era. The various caves probably have been carved out in the 11th century. In these caves are idols of Lord Vishnu. Though the cliffs are named Taramati and Rohidas, they are not related to Ayodhya. Great sage Changdev (one who created the epic Tatvasaar), used to meditate here in the 14th century. The caves are from the same period. The various constructions on the fort and those existing the surrounding region point to the existence of diverse cultures here. The carvings on the temples of Nageshwar (in Khireshwar village), in the Harishchandreshwar temple and in the cave of Kedareshwar indicate that the fort belongs to the medieval period, since it is related to mahadeva as a totem of tribes Mahadev Koli. They were controlling the fort before Moguls. Later the fort was under the control of Moguls. The Marathas captured it in 1747.

Chinas

In the Kalika Purana, the Cinas are again grouped with the Kambojas, Shakas, Khasas and the Barabaras etc. and are said to have sided with Buddhist king Kali in the war against Vedic king Kalika.

Bhuvanakosha section of numerous Puranas locates the Cinas along with the Tusharas, Pahlavas, Kambojas, and Barbaras in the Udichya or northern division of ancient India. There is yet another reference to China as Cina-maru as referred to in the Vayu Purana and Brahmanda Purana. However, at the same place, Matsya Purana mentions Vira-maru. China-maru or Vira-maru has been identified with the lands of Turkestan situated above And-khui in the north of Afghanistan (Dr K. P. Jayswal, Dr M. R. Singh).
